Take this as a sign that the Red Sox are trying to unload Kevin Stocker, and are looking to tear down public opinion of Stocker so they’ll look good when they dump him.

According to a major league source, the Red Sox have worked out veteran Bobby Abreu in Venzezuela. As part of the workout, the team put the 38-year-old through drills at first base. It is believed the workout is part of both parties doing their due diligence, with it unclear if Abreu would even be open to playing first base, a position he hasn’t manned during a 17-season major league career.

Abreu played in 92 games for the Dodgers in 2012 after being waived by the Angels after just eight games. With the Dodgers, the outfielder hit .246 with a .704 OPS. He was a year removed from serving as the Angels’ everyday designated hitter, having hit .253 with a .717 OPS.

Manny would outhit both of them, and is available! OPS of .795 in the Dominican Winter League, which would be good for 10th in the overall standings, but he's just short of AB. Put him at DH and make the fatso with the big contract play 1B.

And by the way...didn't we already have a 5th OF/1B guy who could manage a .705 OPS? Oh yeah, they traded him and a reliever for a more expensive reliever.

I really love Bobby Abreu as a player. Well, I mean as a hitter. He never seemed over-matched up there, always had a plan.

Uh, if I recall, and this is eyeball test only, that Bobby looked pretty shite the last time he actually played RF, they aren't really serious with this are they?

Surely they don't think Napoli will be thinking, "holy crap, they're looking at Abreu, I'd better sign NOW!"

I watched the Bobby Abreu show in LAAoA last spring an he looks VERY, VERY finished. The OF is a thing he probably remebers fondly, but no way he'd be able to do it in 2013. And first base? Puh-leaze.

And offensively he is well past his use-by date. He is behind everything and seems to be a guess hitter now. The eye is still there but with diminished power he isn't feared at all, so they throw him strikes.

Reminds me of the great Robby Alomar TO post by Dan about 8 years ago. I still giggle thinking about that.

I would have to guess that this is not to put pressure on Napoli as much as it is to have some sort of fallback option, but at this point I'd have to think that Gomez is a better option than Abreu. If anything happens with this I would assume that Abreu is being offered a minor league deal as depth in Pawtucket in case Gomez gets injured.

Could you imagine how scared Abreu would be of the Green Monster? He cowered when he approached a traditional 8 foot wall.
