Shades of Hairspray!...“It was a time of tradition, a time of values, and a time…to shake things up.”
Read More...For a journalist, chance encounters at a restaurant or a hair salon can become a major opportunity for advancing a story and in some instances the journalist is in the right place at the right time because he was with his wife. I had a very chance encounter with Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor on Saturday afternoon in lower Manhattan because my wife happened to have an appointment at a ...

1. Bitter Calculus Instructor posted on September 12, 2012 at 06:54 PM # hit 0 | hit 0Looks like all the geographic rivals are doing that on those same four days.
Summer weekends the Phillies are in town:
June 21-23
July 5-7
July 12-14
August 2-4
August 16-18
August 23-25
I doubt it'll be either of the last two or the Fourth of July.
So that leaves June 21-23, July 12-14, and Aug. 2-4.
Since I've been going, they've never had one as early as June 21-23. So probably one of the other two weekends.
happens quite a bit with the messed up, confounded, doesn't work submit system
They've had it in late June or early July three times (Cleveland, Minnesota, Seattle). All began-ended from June 26 to July 1.
They've had it in late July or early Aug. four times (St. Louis, DC, Toronto, Atlanta). All began-ended from July 26 to Aug. 8.
In between July 1 and July 26, just two: LA (July 6-10) and Cincinnati (July 15-18)
Just based on the dates available and when SABR likes to host thins, I'd guess Aug. 2-4 is the most likely weekend. Phillies host the Braves.
Actually, Harvey, they do it whenever they have an article that's a little soft on heft....they figure it gives the impression of heft that would melt away if they printed the actual third and fourth paragraphs....

Why is that "the smart thing?" Don't home openers almost always sell out? Seems like it would be better to put rivalry games on dates that have generally lower attendance.
Or is it all about the TV revenue?
According to the piece, the Red Sox and Yankees are facing each other to start the season as well.
Probably trying to ensure that it does sell out -- be kinda embarrassing for the Astros not to sell out their first AL opener. Plus if there really are a substantial number of fans who are deeply annoyed by the swith to the AL, sucker in the "geographic rivalry" punters. (I am not sure either group numbers more than 10 people. :-)
If it were still an interleague game, she might.
Yeah, I hate that. Let Opening Day stand on its own, the Yankees/Sox (or Astros/Rangers or whatever rivalry you want to pick) should not get in the way of the Opener.
#5: +1. The last decade of watching Houston do so well in the NL Central against those weak teams has made me sick. I talked to my Astros friends until I was blue in the face about how the Lastros wouldn't cut it as an AL team even when they were good because they didn't have to face the Yankees, Bosox, Tigers, etc. Now that the Astros are a AAA team it won't really prove my point. But beating them like an Army mule will be fun anyway.
Welcome to the Luau, Astross. Oh, by the way, you're the pig.
