Cardinals’ Shelby Miller retires 27 straight in 1-hitter

Shelby Miller gave up a single to start the game then nothing else. Not a walk or a hit batter. No one even reached on an error.

The St. Louis Cardinals rookie was perfect after that leadoff single by Eric Young Jr., retiring 27 in a row for his first career complete game, 3-0 over the Colorado Rockies on Friday night.

I'm all for any and all players from the Cardinals retiring. Hell, I generally wish for them to do it 1 or 2 years earlier than they actually do it.

But Berkman would be perfect for the Red Sox next year, if they end up trading Gonzales.

Granted, I'd rather retire than live in Boston, too, if I was a multi-millionaire, but I think he'd have fun with that short LF.

As a Cardinals fan, I will happily take Berkman's 2011, happily pay him two years' salary for it, and not resent it one bit if he chooses to retire after this year. They're not going to take that 2011 championship away from us no matter when Lance retires, and we don't even get into the postseason without him. I don't even mind all those hits he had against us when he was with the Astros. - Brock Hanke

If he wanted to, he could stick around for 5 more years as an ace-in-the-hole pinch hitter, a la Jason Giambi or Johnny Mize.

Berkman's had a very nice career, but he's almost certainly not going to make the HOF even if he comes back and has a couple more good years, unless he wins an MVP or something like that. Just too short a career (in part because of a relatively late start) for a guy with his profile.
