They both have better DERs than the Cardinals.

Cardinals have an Old Beltran and Holliday in the outfield, have a guy who is a DH playing firstbase(Craig) have an outfielder playing second base(Schumaker) a utility player playing etc. I don't know what the defensive numbers say, but Freese, Jay and Molina are the only everyday players who are average or plus, and Descalso and maybe Kozma are decent for bench players.

Angel Hernandez is terrible. He's been terrible for everyone, at least, but he's still terrible.

How does he even get this gig? Everyone in baseball says he's terrible, he is about the only umpire that announcers have no problem bad mouthing regardless of how nice they are. He's about the only umpire that it seems every team ####### about. The guy is the Murray Chass of umpires, just horrible at his job.

Beltran's still a good RF. The problem was, he saw a lot of time in CF this year, which shouldn't happen. The other major drags on STL's defense were Tyler Greene at second and Furcal (-10.1 UZR/150) and Descalso (-16.7 UZR/150) at SS, Berkman (-18.3 UZR/150) at first, and craig (-12.6 UZR/150)/carpenter (-43ish) in RF. Of course there's lots of SSS in that bit, but the point is, all of the guys with a negative UZR at a given position are either no longer with the team, or shifted the right direction on the defensive spectrum for the playoffs, with the exception of Holliday and Craig, and I can live with Holliday's -4.3 UZR/150 and Craig's -3.4 UZR/150 at 1B.

The team on the field right now for STL is a pretty good, not great, but good, defensive team. Probably at least average.

According to Deep Space Nine (which is where I usually go for my baseball rulings), the play is still live even if you're back, sitting in the dugout.

That's not right. Rule 7.08(k) says the batter is out if he makes no attempt to return. The fielder just has to touch the plate while holding the ball and appeal to the umpire.
