Hey, MIT actually sent a player to the majors in 2004. This isn't Caltech we're talking about here...

The Red Sox recently signed a pitcher out of Advanced Software Analysis Junior College.

As a proud MIT alum ('09) let me state:

- We can do a hell of a lot better than some front-office quant job for 18K a year.
- And yet, there are those who would work for peanuts in a front office. Helen Zelman is (was?) with the Diambondbacks, and Joe Boehringer was a scouting director for them.
- The Sloan Sports Conference was (maybe still is) the top destination for hobnobbing with quant-minded execs, including MIT alum and Rockets GM Daryl Morey.
- MIT has a *ton* of sports teams. DIII, and almost all pretty bad. But sports are a huge thing at the 'tute.
- Yeah, you're talking to the guy who pitched his team to the 2007 Class IV intramural slow-pitch softball championships.
- Our fields are named after George Steinbrenner's father.
- Caltech can suck it.

Wait, this kid's got a startup? Now? That's going to be a real drag on his draft prospects, if he has any. (As everyone else in the thread has said, he went to MIT, he's not going to play in short-season A for $1100 a month unless that's all the job he can get. From observing the Brewers org minor league retirements, I'd venture that a lot of the college grads are playing minor league ball until something better comes along--grad school or another job.)

Ah, I forgot my pet theory as to why sports are so popular at MIT. Most of us were chased off the field for general ineptitude sometime around the age of 12. Playing with other Engineers brings back a playing field where the level of play is low enough that sports are fun, rather than demoralizing/embarrassing.
