    The 2013 SABR Analytics Conference will be held Thursday, March 7 through Saturday, March 9, 2013, in downtown Phoenix, Arizona.

    Thursday’s programming will be held at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University, 555 N. Central Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85004.

    Friday and Saturday’s programming will be held at the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown, 340 North 3rd Street, Phoenix, AZ 85004.

    Horrifying news. My condolences to his family and friends. I never met him but he always came off like a first rate guy in his articles and in his postings here.

    Brattain actually talked about this once: he said we should all make a joke in his honor if he died and there was a thread here.

    I never met the guy, but I actually feel sick.

    John was as friendly and pleasant a person to work with as you can imagine. He was always willing to help. I am distraught by this, it's terrible to have lost someone who took such deep, abiding joy in the bizarreness of life.

    He will be missed by thousands.

    Really horrible news, he was always a delight to read, never nasty, just insightful and fun.

    For whatever reason, I decided to read his A-Wreck article last week. I liked it and decided to email him. I found a four year old email that he sent me and replied to it. He said “Only a guy into history would use an e-mail from four years ago for a message. “ I think that he was only 45 or so. I am saddened by this.

    I never met him in person, but I know that we'll all be worse off for not having him around. From all my interactions with him, he was a wonderful person.

    Awful news, even though I've never met him and live several timezones away this makes me sad :(

    His jokes, joy in the absurd and insight will be sorely missed.

    It's fair to say that John was my mentor. He was probably my first loyal reader at Crashburn Alley and he did a lot to help me out, both in terms of honing my writing and in terms of giving me life advice.

    I'm extremely honored to have "known" him and just as extremely disappointed to hear about his passing.

    This will be my last post for a little while–I go under the knife for the ol’ ticker at 7:15 AM Monday. Again, thanks for all the notes and well-wishes; once I’m fixed…er, repaired, I’ll be back with a vengeance. I’ve submitted a column for SMSN Sports that will run next week–beyond that it’s wait-and-see. Regardless, I’ve been a busy boy this week and here’s the latest:

    Really awful news. But, as many here surely know, if there is one guy that would definitely want people to be cheerful and to celebrate him rather than mourn the loss of him, John is that guy.

    Though the "Best regards" gives it away, his most recent handle was "The Bones McCoy of THT", which also heads his posts on that and any other thread. He did get off a few nice lines there; a fitting tribute. Vaya con dios.

    Just awful news. One of the most enjoyable hours of my on-line life was getting marooned on a single open thread one afternoon when the rest of Primer crashed. John was there in exceptional form, telling his favorite horrible jokes, which transcended good and bad taste alike. I remember him talking once about his long-term disability (the result of an accident?), which left him in chronic pain. I never met him F2F, but he seemed to me someone who was determined to enjoy every aspect of life as it went by, the pain with the pleasure.

    He always struck me as the type of guy that I personally never found all that funny, but I always really appreciated his attempts at humor, if that makes sense. I laughed more at the fact that he was trying to make people laugh than at the jokes themselves. Lighthearted guys like that are good guys to have around. I'm sure we'll all miss him a lot.

    In the Lounge I said that John was like the William Jennings Bryan of this place; if Bryan had a sense of humor. He was pretty devout and he was on the player's side when it came to labour issues.

    John is laughing and typing a witty reply from somewhere nice right now... probably something about how Samson wouldn't have been tall enough to see over the operating table.

    He was a top rate poster and a true gentlemen. This is really, really sad. My heart goes out to his family...
