How often is it that a Hall of Fame player has had to put in this kind of apprenticeship, involving a significant tenure as a minor league manager, before he received his chance at big league managing? As I recall, Yogi Berra, Ted Williams, and Frank Robinson never managed a single day in the minor leagues. Bob Lemon was a pitching coach for awhile before becoming a manager, but was he a minor league manager?

It just seems that the Phillies are making Sandberg jump through hoops before he becomes their manager. And the Rockies are ready to make Jason Giambi or Tom Runnells their manager, even though Giambi has never managed anywhere and Runnells has been out of the managing loop for 20 years.
