Hipsters were into certain political views - gay rights, anti-prison industrial complex, and of course legalizing it, "before they were cool," and it has been argued that these "avant-garde" political views hold an important sociological role for making them eventually popular. (If I'm not explaining it well, there is literature on it.)
that hipsters deserve credit for taking these positions before they were cool, is emblematic of the criticism that hipsters fail to understand the larger context in which they do what they do.
Not only was the flash mob a vacuous fad; it was, in its very form (pointless aggregation and then dispersal), intended as a metaphor for the hollow hipster culture that spawned it.
I know this because I happen to have been the flash mob’s inventor.
I'm not totally sure about that. Most hipsters I've encountered are solidly middle class, yes, but definitely don't have income levels high enough to live in the areas you describe. See, having a high-paying job is just too "mainstream"; hipsters work at fair trade coffee houses and tattoo parlors and independent theaters and so forth.
So, Mr. Harper's guy is already starting at a questionable place with me.
But having really boutique interests is one way of avoiding engagement.
1. White - I mean, yes, hipsters are almost always white, but the majority of all people are white; I wouldn't include this as a criterion
Our 12 year old goddaughter has called me a hipster, and I don't think she meant it as an insult.
It's all relative. Her dad is 78.
He had a kid at 66 years old?
Hipster is a fashion

That's the same price the hipster pays for a studio or 1 bedroom in DC. How he/she affords it on coffee shop tips, I have no idea. Probably means roommate(s). If you needed help to pay for the house on a golf course, you can fit a lot more roommates in 3000 sq feet than you can in 500.
