When I was in high school during the mid-1970s, I used a slide rule to work out the batting averages, ERAs, etc., for my school baseball team.
The slide rule kept me out of Viet Nam. To continur my student deferment I needed to be a full time student, and one semester I needed 2 more credit hours. There was only one class that fit my schedule-slide rule. (For the exams I multilpied long hand like I learned in grammar school.)
I know the slide rule is some sort of elongated device which was made obsolete with the invention of the pocket calculator (1980?). That's all I know.
Quoted because this is a great comment regardless of context.
