Gutting the new manager has never been easier, thanks to the ax effect!

The Dodgers were swept over their weekend in Atlanta, getting outscored, 16-8. Their bullpen allowed 12 of the runs. And Mattingly’s postgame quotes were the equivalent of bad body language, the thoughts of a manager who doesn’t know how to snap his team out of it.

I hadn't watched Survivor in a few years myself, but came back this season because Jeff Kent was on the show. He was surprisingly one of the more likeable characters on the show. (I actually stopped watching it mostly because they just kept casting horrible people who were trying to help start their acting careers).

I was really disappointed he was voted off. But, the rant at the end was awesome.

I commented on that yesterday, in some thread I can't find now (the Google search hasn't worked for me in awhile).

Kent certainly acquitted himself well. He got along with everyone without being wishy washy, competed hard in the challenges, and was never outed as a multimillionaire. Only one other player recognized him, and she told him so, but didn't tell anyone else. It was funny the time she went on in front of the group about how boring baseball was though. Kent didn't crack.

If he checks with Richard Hatch and other early-season winners, he'll find it was about 600 grand when Bush took it, too. And Rants is right...Kent was great on the show. Even show host Jeff Probst couldn't trip him up when he asked him at one tribal council, "So...Jeff...you ever play any other game with this kind of pressure?" (Note for non-watchers: Jeff was keeping his baseball identity secret from the other contestants.)

"Obama takes his share" made me smile as the show was broadcast the day after the election.

Kent looked like he hurt his knee pretty badly during the first 30 minutes of the first episode, so I was surprised he hung in for as long as he did.

His background cover was that he owned a ranch and a motorcycle dealership.
(Not a truck washing shop, as I hoped he would say.)

I also wanted someone to bring up baseball and then DEFEND Barry Bonds. Oh man, that would have been gold to see Kent's reaction.

Edit: Oh, and he earned about $86million during his playing career.

Heh. The tax rant bit is funny. You get paid more than many people make in 20 years (for example, $30k a year over 20 years = $600k) for a few weeks of TV work and you complain that you have to pay tax on it. The richest people are the cheapest, that is for certain.

My sister was very poor, and complained about having to pay taxes. Her problem was that she withheld too little, so on April 15 she always owed a lot, and being poor she's already spent it. She complained incessantly about her taxes being too high, when basically it came down to her just not wanting to pay what she had not planned for but had been obvious she would owe.

It's not that the richest are the cheapest, but that the cheapest are the loudest.

Speaking of making a lot of money, you know who's currently one of the top few players in career earnings (including future ccommitments)? Adrian Beltre will have made $167M by the time he's 36. I know there a handful of guys ahead of him, but you'd never think of him as one of the big stars of our time.

I wish Beltre was spared his five years in Safeco. A choice that was obviously his, but still. Coming off one of the all-time great seasons for a 3B in 2004, he was an average offensive player in Seattle for five years. In the three years since, Beltre ranks 4th in MLB in bWAR and 5th in fWAR. A great player with a half-decade of offensive mediocrity crammed into the peak of his career. Bizarre.

To add some craziness on top of that insanity: bWAR doesn't even measure one major part of Zobrist's value: he's able to play several positions.
