Milwaukee Journal, May 23, 1913:

Big Ed Walsh, twirling star of the White Sox, announced today that he has joined the faculty of a correspondence school and hereafter must be addressed as “Professor”. For a paper dollar Walsh will send out to aspirants for fame six lessons on the science of moistening the ball and putting it where the batter’s bat isn’t. Walsh starts his classes Monday.

This is not something that strikes me as a useful service. Nonetheless, I’d love to be able to read Walsh’s ...

As noted at THT, today marks 30 years since the signing of a player on the HoF ballot. Can you figure out which one before clicking on the link?

By signing, I mean his initial pro contract, not a mid-career free agent signing.

I don't off the top of my head. November 26 and April 2 are memorably good, though. February 6 has a guy (G.H. Ruth) who's both a good ace starter and a reasonably decent hitter.

Several Dugout regulars and I are compiling 25-man rosters for all 365 days, which will be used to play a Birthday League. There's no particular team I expect to win it all.

I'd guess Edgar or Sammy, simply because they wouldn't have been drafted.
Most drafted players back then would have signed before late December, so it would be someone signed as a teenager from one of the islands.

Sammy would have been pretty young (16?) and Edgar would have been about right (18?).

I'm going to guess Sammy Sosa.

Clemens was a big college star with a gigantic ego, I would imagine he held out as long as possible before the signing deadline. Of course I don't know what the deadline was back then, or indeed what it is now.

I believe Clemens was drafted in 1983.

The signing deadline back then was the next draft and you just went back into the pool. See JD Drew and a handful of others. The signing deadline is a fairly recent invention (partly due to JD Drew). It got moved up quite aggressively in the last CBA I think.

It was pretty common for guys to not sign until 6 months or so later -- e.g. Prior. Sometimes this was due to contentious negotiations but it seemed to happen often with pitchers suggesting it was just a way to give their arm time to rest without starting the minor-league service clock. I suppose it also made sense if the player was going to get a major-league contract.

I don't get the need to get a sixth starter in return for Morales, but overall it seems like a fair swap.

Hey, Vargas may have been a sixth starter on the Angels, but now that he's on the Mariners ... oh wait.

Morales instantly becomes the Mariners' best hitter by a huge margin. Except of course John Jaso.
