It happened with Kaiser Wilhelm though I'm not sure whether it was the ballplayer or the emperor who came first.

I did this in college, when I referred to the genial Andy Roberts as Bip. Seeing as the original was mostly just a San Diego farmhand at the time, no one knew where the name came from.
