Pirates Welcome Gerrit Cole to the Bigs

This isn’t exactly how Gerrit Cole wanted it, but the 2011 No.1 overall draft pick finally gets what he thought he deserved a couple of months ago — his first major league start today for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Cole will face the visiting San Francisco Giants, plugging a hole in what has been a solid Pirates rotation but has been hit by injuries to Wandy Rodriguez and Jeanmar Gomez.

He said that in the medical community, it's called "word salad" -- like a tossed salad but with words.

But it's really serious when you start talking about tossing salads.

I'm a reader, and I generally just take new releases out of the library, almost regardless of subject matter. As a result, I've read two Sarah Palin books this year. And both of them (one is a very flattering portrait) use the phrase "word salad" liberally. I have never heard it before.

It's a pretty common one in psychiatry circles. One of my brothers used to have somnambulant episodes in which he would talk in a very normal tone of voice but make absolutely no sense whatsoever.

I used to get migraine headaches during my adolescence and have had a couple of similar episodes myself. I recall that my thoughts were clear and I wanted to laugh at myself as I heard the words come out. Nothing so colorful as bank robbers and henchmen, though, just the right words in a random order.

I wanted some more context, so I watched this on MLB.tv.

It's just kinda terrifying for me in a weird way. It's not like there's much of a pause either before or after. He's talking, making perfect sense, then complete absurdity followed by a short pause (not as long as the article makes it sound,) before he's back to normal again (He didn't miss a pitch.)
