The timing for our first year electing 4 candidates could not have worked out better, since class of 2013 is the strongest in terms of electees that we’ve ever had. The top of the 1934 ballot included Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker, Eddie Collins, Pop Lloyd, Smokey Joe Williams and Cristobal Torriente, but only 2 were elected.

Natural gas eventually replaced coal for domestic heating and cleared the skies. Some of the older buildings still are black from the soot Kiner describes.
Here's a picture of Kiner at his wedding, with his bride Nancy Chaffee the tennis player. South of pretty boy, but well north of ugly.
And of course you know the old cliche: Chicks dig the long ball. Kiner led the NL in home runs his rookie year, and led the Majors in home runs for the six years after that.

Well sure Ralph, maybe in the 30's, 40's and 50's. I grew up there in the 70's and 80's and there was smog aplenty.
