2013 Results: Bonds, Clemens, Piazza and Biggio are elected to the Hall of Merit!

Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Mike Piazza and Craig Biggio have been elected to the Hall of Merit!

The timing for our first year electing 4 candidates could not have worked out better, since class of 2013 is the strongest in terms of electees that we’ve ever had. The top of the 1934 ballot included Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker, Eddie Collins, Pop Lloyd, Smokey Joe Williams and Cristobal Torriente, but only 2 were elected.

Bonds and Clemens were each unanimous at 1 and 2. I believe that’s the first ...

A half-decade in, the Pittsburgh smoke-control ordinance had not yielded results.

The first time Kiner arrived in Pittsburgh, it was 10 a.m., but it looked like it was nighttime.

He’d never experienced life in a steel-mill town.

“It was so smoky, you couldn’t believe it. Soot was almost like fog, all over the city. Coming from Southern California where there was no smog, it was harder to breathe. You’d wear a white shirt and an hour and a half later it would be dirty.

Natural gas eventually replaced coal for domestic heating and cleared the skies. Some of the older buildings still are black from the soot Kiner describes.

Here's a picture of Kiner at his wedding, with his bride Nancy Chaffee the tennis player. South of pretty boy, but well north of ugly.

And of course you know the old cliche: Chicks dig the long ball. Kiner led the NL in home runs his rookie year, and led the Majors in home runs for the six years after that.

I remember one day looking up the guitar tabs to the song and chuckling when I saw the Boston-centric lyrics "Green Line girl" and "North End girl" transcribed as "green-eyed girl" and "northern girl."

Well sure Ralph, maybe in the 30's, 40's and 50's. I grew up there in the 70's and 80's and there was smog aplenty.
