2013 Results: Bonds, Clemens, Piazza and Biggio are elected to the Hall of Merit!

Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Mike Piazza and Craig Biggio have been elected to the Hall of Merit!

The timing for our first year electing 4 candidates could not have worked out better, since class of 2013 is the strongest in terms of electees that we’ve ever had. The top of the 1934 ballot included Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker, Eddie Collins, Pop Lloyd, Smokey Joe Williams and Cristobal Torriente, but only 2 were elected.

Bonds and Clemens were each unanimous at 1 and 2. I believe that’s the first ...

Oh, please. By this definition, every team consists of mercenaries, or at least people who will become mercenaries as soon as they're allowed to. The Yankees can just afford the more expensive mercenaries, instead of the Mark Kotsays of the world. You think Mark Kotsay has some deep and abiding love of San Diego? Such that he wouldn't take a bigger contract to play for (yet) another team? He's a Hessian, just a not particularly in-demand Hessian.

Reading TFA, Jordan says that the 1996-2002 Yankees (i.e., rosters with very few Italians) represent his favorite teams.

First team I ever rooted for was the 1950 Yanks, when their best four players were all Italian-Americans. First and last time I bet that's ever been the case. They all seemed to have that fighting Viking spirit underneath their cool Mediterranean demeanor, so naturally I identified with them.

It seems so bizarre nowadays that someone would make a living as a stereotypical Italian comedian under the name "Pat Cooper". He literally changed his name from something stereotypically Italian ("Pasquale Caputo") to a generic unmemorable whitebread name. And of course hundreds of Jewish entertainers did the same.

Likewise this guy Pat Jordan. I've read tons of his stuff without ever knowing he was representing the Italian-American perspective.
