2013 Results: Bonds, Clemens, Piazza and Biggio are elected to the Hall of Merit!

Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Mike Piazza and Craig Biggio have been elected to the Hall of Merit!

The timing for our first year electing 4 candidates could not have worked out better, since class of 2013 is the strongest in terms of electees that we’ve ever had. The top of the 1934 ballot included Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker, Eddie Collins, Pop Lloyd, Smokey Joe Williams and Cristobal Torriente, but only 2 were elected.

Bonds and Clemens were each unanimous at 1 and 2. I believe that’s the first ...

I was with him right up to the part about Hernandez and Mattingly.

There's a non-stupid case for Hernandez, but the best that can be said of Mattingly (vis-a-vis the Hall of Fame; I'm not trying to slam him as a person or manager) is that he was on a Hall of Fame path through 28, after which point he was never the same player again.

If Barry is not an automatic, in any era, no matter what help he might have gotten, Hall of Fame baseball player, than I’m done with this Cooperstown thing.

Last thing, when people mention that Keith Hernandez is one of the best all-time 1B, ever, doesn’t that mean he is a HOF caliber baseball player? I think so.

In a fairness, pretty much everyone looks like a HOFer compared to Rico. I can't imagine how that guy made it six years at first base with an aggregate OPS+ of 92. And he quit on his own - in mid season, still on a big league roster and getting at-bats (Braves, natch).

The headline isn't a tautology, it's a statement asserting the validity of the law of the excluded middle, but only as it pertains to Hall of famers. The intuitionists would take exception to that for infinite sets, but they wouldn't mind to use it for the set of HoF players, which is obviously finite.

Clearly the function of the headline is to mollify any constructive matematician* reading the article.

*) Except a hypothetical ultrafinitist that can't count to 200.
