1. Rafael Bellylard: Built like a Fielder posted on November 23, 2012 at 08:44 AM # hit 0 | hit 0The gift is awesome.
The only way it would be more awesome is if there was a DVD of "Ichiro's All-Star Speeches".
Even a Taiwanese Animators version would be a hit! I tremble at the thought of Ichiro signing with a National League team, but perhaps he has no interest in playing for those ########### #############.
The only people for whom he is not a HOFer are the MLB-only, anti-narrative stat-purists. They will not make a difference in the vote, assuming any of them have a vote.
And his handwriting is Teh Awesome.
He has a career writing subtitles for Japanese movies.
The only problem now is I can see tons of fans trying to do the same thing in hopes of a gift. However, to do it for 8 years is not an easy thing unless it is done out of pure joy of the game. Makes one hope Ichiro can get another shot somewhere and play at the 200 hits per season level and keep around for awhile longer.
But returning to the actual story, Ichiro is great. I hope he's got one more Ichiro season in him.
Even if he re-signs with the Yankees?
Sure, but the point was that you don't have to accept A. If you are a 'stats' person who only focuses on hits and runs and things, you'd still give him a vote. And, if you're a saber-stats person who doesn't give extra-MLB credit, you'd STILL vote for Ichiro.
Well, most people aren't willing to do that, absent a change to make the HoF the International Baseball Hall of Fame, in the manner of the basketball Hall of Fame - which I suspect most folks would also oppose. However, for Ichiro, it's sufficient for his NPB service to be an acceptable reason for not penalizing him for a "short" MLB career. The vast majority of HoF voters will go for that, IMHO.
There is no "penalty for a short career." The problem is not enough value.
Had he been capable of hitting for more power or getting on base more, his short career wouldn't have mattered.
That seems very likely to be the minority view, for all the reasons that have been raised in prior Ichiro threads. Maybe, I'm misremembering, but I believe the anti-Ichiro HoF caucus is not much more than a single Primate.
I have to agree with this. It doesn't make sense in the context of a Hall of Fame discussion to talk about penalties. Players put forth markers in an attempt to accumulate enough greatness to be considered. The default should always be that a player isn't qualified for Cooperstown, until he accumulates enough positives.
Of course, Ichiro doesn't have a short career. He has a long career, divided between Japan and the U.S.
You're misremembering. Some others here also hold my view, and IF we are talking about his MLB career only (yes, I realize this is a huge issue for people) then still more people (including MCOA) agree that his MLB-only career isn't enough.
