1. Why Bloody Valdespin? posted on March 07, 2012 at 10:49 PM # hit 0 | hit 0Man, is that ever the truth. Madonna must be devastated.
Part of me feels badly for him while the other part knows it was entirely self-inflicted.
Yeah, but the third part of me wishes that Tod Browning were still alive.
For me, I think it was Pat Jordan's piece from 2008.
Who is Lenny Dykstra, Alex.
Sporting screw-ups for 600 please.
I doubt Jose will want to fight him for her.
The congressional hearing, where Canseco was all over the place, one moment presenting himself to the panel as a expert witness, another as a champion of the new steroids wonder era, then next recanting and offering to use his fame to expose the dangers of PEDs to America's children, if only Congress would embrace him. His fellow players were openly contemptuous of him, particularly McMwire and Schilling, and he just took it like a tackling dummy.
It was clear the main reason he was there was because he was so desperate for attention.
Poor Chuck.
She really didn't come off very well in the Jordan piece.
Did anybody?
Don't jump to conclusions. He's perfect for the standard ex-jock jobs in real estate or auto sales. I'd love to have Canseco show me around a 2009 Dodge Durango or a 3,500 square foot REO in Henderson, NV.
The lawyer seemed like an OK guy, and reading the piece made me respect Jordan's abilities as a writer more, since I hadn't read much of his stuff before that.
I'll admit to being morbidly impressed with the candidness of Jose's ex-wife, too.
What was unsatisfying was after mentioning it, there was no follow-up. Did he try to contact the child? Did he take responsibility for her? ??
Even if he's spent every dime he made in baseball, he had about 15 years in the game which I think would imply a pretty decent pension.
"Baseball: MLB was the first pro sport to set up a pension (1947). It originally offered $100/mo depending on the number of years played. The original requirement was 5 years service time, then it was reduced to 43 days for a full pension (1 day for medical). There are even players who have been called up to the big leagues, sat the bench for a few weeks, never got in a game, and will still receive a pension (The plan only requires the player to be on the roster, not appear in any games). Sweet Deal!!! The minimum a player will receive is $1,000/mo, and it maxes out at $180,000 for players with 10+ years service time. Pensions begin at age 62."
Not sure if they offer a reduced pension if you start to draw early. Canseco's got a while to go before age 62, but then he'll be set.

Want to bet he doesn't make it that far?
If that's possible, maybe he already have signed away his pension for a lump sum and spent it all....
I am hyperventilating at the pure genius of that screen name.
I'm sure there's somebody out there that would risk loaning him a yearly "stipend" until age 62, if he were willing to enter into a faustian deal where he agreed to sign over a good chunk of his future pension earnings.
Can you really pledge your future pension earnings (i.e. can someone actually get a lien on them)? If not, and the claim wouldn't survive a bankruptcy filing by Canseco, then I don't think that you'd find too many people willing to make that loan.
