After months of denial and an inexplicably huge surge in home runs, Japan’s baseball chiefs have admitted they secretly switched the design of the ball to make the game more exciting.

Players and fans had repeatedly quizzed Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) bosses after seeing a 40 percent rise in the number of balls that were slugged out of the park so far this season.

Stuck in 2010, apparently.

He did nothing last year. He apparently pissed the organization off somehow (maybe refused to report to Boston or something?) because they buried him in Pawtucket for reasons unknown. He didn't pitch well either.

Are the Softbank Hawks usually a player? I don't seem to recall hearing about them before, but it seems like they are signing everyone this off-season. Of course I'm not exactly well versed in NPB affairs.

The Hawks won the Japan Series last season, and had the best regular season record in NPB. They're generally a good team. They also won the Japan Series in 1999 and 2003, and have made the playoffs the past three seasons.
