It is painful to say this, but Joe Torre did such a poor job managing Team USA in the World Baseball Classic that I think Bobby Valentine could have done better.
Despite the Americans’ obvious problems hitting and scoring runs, Torre managed with the imagination of a tree trunk. [...]
Good managers, though, can adjust quickly and adapt to new circumstances.
But what do I know? Torre once told me I didn’t know anything about baseball, and neither, for that matter, did any other writer.
Joe Torre’s Team USA coaching staff for the 2013 World Baseball Classic was announced on Monday, led by three former managers and legendary Braves Dale Murphy and Greg Maddux.
Larry Bowa will serve as bench coach, Marcel Lachemann as bullpen/pitching coach, Gerald Perry as hitting coach, Willie Randolph as third-base coach, Murphy as first-base coach and Maddux as pitching coach.
Can Maddux pitch if everybody hits their pitch-counts?
