Still, Mattingly looked to be about a week from getting fired at one point there. If the owners had pretty much decided to can him before they got hot, no particular reason for them to be in his corner now.
Damn straight. And more particularly, just what is his failing or issue that would warrant his firing? From what I've seen, he's done a fine damn job of getting his players to focus on playing good baseball for three years amid a generally circus-like franchise atmosphere. This year he got good performances from nearly all of the veterans, and both Ryu and Puig blossomed wonderfully. How realistically could another manager be expected to do better?
I swear I read a Donnie quote from yesterday in which he expressed some dismay that Puig was called up when he was. Wanted the wild horse to have some more seasoning in the minor-league corrals.
If indeed the organization promoted Puig against Mattingly's advice, then Mattingly deserves extra credit for putting his ego aside.
I have no particular opinion on Mattingly's performance one way or the other* but will point out that while it is completely justified to ask "what responsibility does Mattingly bear for any problems" it is also completely justified to ask "what credit does he deserve for the brilliant run?" Bob Brenly won a WS for crying out loud.
The question remains: what better performance from this 2013 Dodgers roster should have been expected? What shortfalls of this team's performance should be blamed on Mattingly?
I wonder who these owners want? Pat Riley?

Phil Jackson or Pat Riley would not have any respect in a baseball clubhouse due to their complete lack of experience with baseball, and would thus not be able to lead men.
Adroitly handling the press and politics in the front office may be the single most important managerial skill in the 21st century.

I agree with Ray that speaking in platitudes is not exactly a rare skill. But that isn't by any means the totality of media skill. Massaging the media probably happens off the record and behind closed doors more than it does in Q&A sessions. Everyone has seen a city's media turn against a manager, and seen that manager fired shortly after.
Dusty Baker's "performance" during the recent Phillips-Rosecrans scream session is an example of how not to handle media. I am unsure about high school students, but confident that every manager in A-ball would have done a better job defusing the confrontation.
This is an odd comment attached to a thread where a manager crapped the bed in handling the press and gave everybody a headache for no reason.
