"Don't get me wrong, don't believe that I don't appreciate it -- I do appreciate that. At the same time, I'm a team player," Rivera said. "Those things -- I hate to talk about myself and those stats. The most important thing is we won. Thirty saves, 20 saves, 50 saves, whatever it is, as long as we win, it don't matter. Winning is the only thing, and that's what we are here for."
Why the hell is he retiring? It sure isn't because he can't get the job done anymore.
Does he not have the most 40 save seasons yet or something? Is there going to be another celebration when/if that happens?
Edit: I looked it up. Apparently Hoffman has 9 40 save seasons.
Double Edit: he is tied with Gagne for the most 50 save seasons ... with 2.
Is that the record for the most records in jeopardy?
Was Chipper Jones the only recent player to get the going away tour? I don't remember something like this for Tony Gwynn. Anyway, I liked the one for Jones and--perhaps obviously--I love the one for Mo.
Britt Burns was traded from the ChiSox to the Yanks for Joe Cowley & Ron Hassey at the end of '85. Unfortunately, Burns had a degenerative hip condition and never pitched in the majors again. He made a failed comeback attempt in 1990 for the Yanks but pitched poorly in the minors.
C - Dave Nilsson .309/21/62
Q: Why did Nilsson quit? Homesickness or something? He was 29 and coming off one of his best seasons.
3B - Jackie Robinson .275/10/43
Also, the footnote seems to go out of its way to keep Bonds off of the team.
CF - Kenny Lofton .296/7/38
I nominate Richie Ashburn - .306/7/28 for the 1962 Mets (and missed qualifying for the league OBP title by 29 PAs)...
Lofton .296/.367/.414/.781 105 OPS+
Ashburn .306/.424/.393/.817 121 OPS+
DiMaggio .263/.365/.422/.787 116 OPS+
