Alex Sanabia is on the Marlins. The odds are at least decent that you’ve never heard of Alex Sanabia before. What’s he all about? Let’s see ... leads the league in losses ... kind of a control pitcher in the minors ... 24 years old ... drafted in the 32nd round, just a round after William Mays ... but pretty nondescript, mostly.

If it's true the Marlins had a choice between the three catchers, it's a bit telling they'd go for Mathis. I'd've been all over Arencibia but I guess the Marlins want a guy who is a sure bet to never be more expensive than he already is.

If that's what they wanted, Omir Santos is available. Or they could have reacquired John Baker.

There's some real dark spots there, but the top 4 in the rotation and the Bautista/Encarnacion/Reyes/Lawrie grouping is a heck of a start to a team. I'd say they are absolutely legit contenders.

I suppose the difference between a 60-win team and a 70-win team is that if you combine all the best players from two 70-win teams, as is being done here (except Stanton), you get a legit contender. Would not be true if the Twins traded all their best players for Chris Coleman and Darwin Barney.

Between this and the Dodgers deal, it seems there's much less of a downside to signing a bunch of players to big contracts now; since teams are locking their free agents up early, fewer stars are available in free agency, so it seems there's always a team out there willing to trade for them.

The Red Sox managed to package an injured Carl Crawford into a deal where the Dodgers took his contract, and the Dodgers seemed happy to do it...

(So much for that being purely a Dodgers-have-money thing.)

Reyes, Johnson and Buehrle are pretty much living up to their contracts, though. Crawford had been incredibly disappointing.

Marlins built a new park. Stunk. Nobody showed up. Dump a bunch of underacheivers. Yet BBTF and Stanton are up in arms. Ridiculous as usual. Good luck to the Blue Jays. To be honest to me this looks like a dumpster fire for them when they win 75 games.

Not true. The Marlins were drawing about 11,000 more fans per game until they gave up the season by trading Hanley Ramirez and others. Someone needs to tell Loria that increasing attendance is a multi-year process. You don't do it in half a season.

Loria is a New Yorker, he doesn't want to trade good players to Boston.
But he'll do it for Toronto, he's got nothing against Canadians. Those loveable lumberjacks were the first ones to let him in the game, picking off that helpless Montreal franchise and running it in to the ground.

Even if the A-Rod to Marlins trade is true and the Yankees dump the entirety of the A-Rod contract on the Marlins (and since that's such a good deal for the Yankees I'm now just assuming it's inevitable that it happens exactly that way)... who do they play at 3B next year?

It's an interesting trade. I don't know nearly enough about the prospects to know if the Marlins got any value at all, but Loria... yeah, he's quite the git.
