To be consistent, I’m sure the sportswriters will refer to the Medical Wing of the Hall of Fame:

Dr. Frank Jobe, who developed the elbow procedure known as “Tommy John surgery” that has helped baseball players extend their careers, will be honored during Hall of Fame induction weekend on July 27.

Tommy John will attend the ceremony to help honor Jobe for his impact on the sport. John was diagnosed with a ruptured MCL in his left elbow in 1974 when Jobe tried a procedure in which he ...

"hole in the heart" usually means a septal defect, but TFA says "a small "hole" in the exterior of his heart". I have no idea what they mean by that

I think they mean a hole on the pericardium, the "sack" the heart lies in.

I've had more heart surgeries than most people under 50, basically they probably put him on a blood thinner if the hole is smaller than 3 millimeters. Problem is he if he bumps his head it is an ER visit to prevent a major blood on the brain issue.

Since this is today's Mets thread: I am very unhappy with this Marlon Byrd stuff. Terry Collins talking him up as the starting right fielder. It's annoying that he might be getting a leg up on the competition just because he was a good player 4 years ago.

I am a doctor, and I have no clue what a "hole in the exterior of the heart" refers to. It looks like he had an arrythmia of some kind. I'm guessing he misunderstood something the doctor told him.

Byrd may be done, but his 2011 numbers would have fit right into the Mets OF and if you put his 2010 stats into 2012 he would have been their second best hitter out there.

Still, if you want one of your younger guys to take a step forward (if only as a trade chit), naming Byrd as your starter isn't the way to go about it.

What is the point? Is it that the Mets should have someone better than Byrd to play? If it is, then that's on Sandy et al. Is it that you think Collins won't play young players? It seems like he has been willing to do so. He's come out and said that he wants to give the closer's job to Parnell.

My point is that the sum total of the negative of playing Byrd - taking development time away from Baxter/Cowgill and losing 0.1 wins in the process - pales in comparison to what's really wrong with the team, and you have to multiply that by the probability that Collins is actually serious. That's the math.

Outside of doing something crazy like throwing Valdespin in CF and Nieuwenhuis in RF to get them both ABs to see if they can play, I don't think there is any choice the Mets can make regarding who the RF is that makes any difference whatsoever as to the short, medium or long-term outlook of the team. All of the options suck.

Mets' Feliciano pitches with heart monitor on

JUPITER, Fla. -- Mets reliever Pedro Feliciano wore a heart monitor while pitching and reported no problems or discomfort during his first spring training outing.

Feliciano threw one inning against the Miami Marlins in a "B" game on a practice field behind Roger Dean Stadium. He allowed one run - on Ben Lasater's home run - hit a batter and struck out one.

Feliciano was diagnosed last week with a rare genetic condition called left ventricular noncompaction. The condition results from the failure of myocardial development from birth. Feliciano said he never thought about the heart monitor while in the game.The 36-year-old left-hander missed the past two seasons because of a shoulder injury.
