Affirming his status as a True Yankee by taking the cash over any other considerations…

Alex Rodriguez’s only World Series ring is up for auction, although Rodriguez himself is not the one who consigned it.

As 1010 WINS’ Gene Michaels reported, Rodriguez’s 2009 World Series ring is not being sold by the Yankees third baseman himself, but by an auctioneer who bought it from his cousin, Yuri Sucart – the man A-Rod said convinced him to use steroids.

Tony Larussa just announced his retirement. Best manager in my lifetime and probably the past fifty years.

Maybe the best timed retirement ever. Has any manager that old and with that good a career ever retired after winning a championship? There've been some great athletes like Jim Brown and Sandy Koufax who retired at the top of their games, but the only comparable manager or coach who comes to mind is Red Auerbach, and he was only in his late 40's when he stepped down as the Celtics' coach. I'm sure there've been more, but I'm drawing a blank.

Bill Walsh retired from the NFL after winning his 3rd Super Bowl. He later coached Stanford for the 2nd time but, of course, never again in the NFL.

Holy crap, he was. He looks like he's in his late 60s in photographs. People age much differently than they used to.

Other than the baldness, he didn't really look all that much older than he really was. Here's what he looked like after his final game as coach. He was 48 at the time.

I think people are missing the obvious here. Tony LaRussa will manage the Cardinals next year, except it'll be Tony LaRussa the horse. The Cardinals save money by not needing to hire a human manager, the fans get a familiar name at the helm, and there's probably no difference in the quality of the managing. I feel bad for the bench coach, though, who gets stuck cleaning up after Tony LaRussa.
