Affirming his status as a True Yankee by taking the cash over any other considerations…

Alex Rodriguez’s only World Series ring is up for auction, although Rodriguez himself is not the one who consigned it.

As 1010 WINS’ Gene Michaels reported, Rodriguez’s 2009 World Series ring is not being sold by the Yankees third baseman himself, but by an auctioneer who bought it from his cousin, Yuri Sucart – the man A-Rod said convinced him to use steroids.

I find it comforting that someone else writes so much about a baseball card. I still like the Richie Hebner one a lot, as well. I do get the drift of "enough about Mantle already", however.

"Cardboard Gods" is a fine book, but the overwhelming impression I got from it was that all three of Wilker's parents (yes, three...read the book) shoulda been horsewhipped. But that's just me.

Really? I think the Mongolians of the 13th century and their 16% overall land mass holding have an argument here. Maybe the British of the early 20th century, with their control of 25% world land mass and 20% of the world's population also are in the picture.

We had the "what if the entire world declared war on the US" thread recently, right? I suspect the US would do better in that scenario than the Brits or Mongols would. (Especially because I don't think it'd be reasonable to count the Indians, etc. as fighting on the Brits' behalf.)

Yeah, but neither could project power like the US.

The Mongols ran out of steam when they hit forested/hilly country w/o grazing for their horses, or the water (see Japan/Kamakazi). The British had a miniscule land army, and counted for very little in European BOP, until they raised a mass army in 1915.

Plus, there's the whole nuclear thing.

BOP = Balance of Power.

Although the Brit-ophiles would contend that the Royal Navy would be an an important factor in the Balance of Power in that which ever side it opposed would not be able to trade outside of Europe.

Although shipping material goods ain't what it used to be, it's certainly at least worth noting that the US Navy battle fleet has more tonnage than the next 13 nations combined.
