He was recovering from an illness last year and we don't really know how much that affected him.
I think the over-arching problem here is that Davis's 156 OPS+ in his partial 2011 (150 PA) raised expectations to an unreasonable level. If you view him as a true 110 OPS+ hitter who is entering his prime (I am inclined not to over-penalize him for his horrid 2013, thus the 110 OPS+ which I pulled out of my posterior), you can reasonably hope that he posts a 110-130 OPS+ for the foreseeable future.
I can't even mount a defense of Davis. One just can't be as bad as he was for as long as he was. One thing to consider - if I recall correctly, Davis was brought up from the minors in mid-April of his rookie season. How long does he have to spend in the minors to delay his free agency (granted, that might not even matter if he continues to suck this badly)?
However, Alderson said he does consider Ike Davis to be part of the ‘core,’ despite demoting Davis to Triple-A on Sunday.
• Daniel Murphy appears the primary candidate to play first base with Ike Davis at Las Vegas. That will allow the Mets to get at least a short-term look at Jordany Valdespin at second base. Josh Satin should also get limited time at first base. Alderson confirmed Lucas Duda moving from left field is a distant third in the way of options
Concur. This seems like the stupidest idea imaginable.
Keeping the seat warm for Flores?
Way to devalue your 2nd best position player. Put David Wright in RF while you're at it.
So, it's not very clear exactly what the Mets are looking to do with Flores.
I like Valdespin getting time in the infield ... but I don't think [Valdespin at 2B/Murphy at 1B] is the way to do it.
I think the best move is to put Duda at first. The guy is not an OF. He could play every day in the OF for the next 50 years and still be terrible there. His future is either with the Mets as a 1B, or with another team as a 1B/DH. Him stumbling around in LF is not going to help his trade value at all, and it's possible that if he moves to first and doesn't need to worry about the defense in the OF, it might help his hitting a little. Probably not, but small chance.
I don't think moving Murph to first for a few weeks or so (which is probably all this ends up being) hurts his trade value all that much, but I do think he is at the point where he still needs all the time at second he can get.
“I’ve never had shortstop in that ‘core’ column,” Alderson said. However, he added, “Ike is the kind of player we would like to rely on for the future.”
When asked if Duda was part of the team moving forward, Alderson paused, for a while, then said that he feels Duda is a “serviceable player who is making a contribution.”
