    Phil Wood’s still honking…who knew?

    This brings us back to balls and strikes, and the case of minor league ump—and big league fill-in—John Tumpane.

    Tumpane was behind the plate May 12 when the Nationals played the Cubs.

    Tumpane is a Triple-A guy who’s called up when a regular ump has a day off. He started getting major league assignments in 2010 when he was only 27 and apparently believes that close enough is good enough.

    Sure. Here is a picture of Laura San Giacomo.

    She was on a late 90s sitcom called "Just Shoot Me". She starred in a 1990 movie called "Quigley Down Under" (with Tom Selleck!) when she was at the peak of her hotness. Jeff Francoeur's "just shoot me" quote reminded #8 of Laura and her giant boobs, which in turn reminded me of that awesome Tom Selleck movie.

    Cole Hamels pitched 262 innings (at 25, in 2008) the year the Phillies won the World Series.

    So how does this work? I'm supposed to believe Jeff Francoeur is walking around with Cole Hamels workload from four years ago, down to the inning, rattling around in his head? That is something I'm not prepared to accept. I mean, surely he said something like "Carl Hamels threw something like 300 innings that year they won it all" and the writer just helped him out. Right? Please?

    And the fact that I completely agree with Jeffy on this one, frankly, has me seriously rethinking my position.

    Edit: And for those who are, um, fans of Ms. San Giacomo allow me to recommend the failed Liam Neeson vehicle Under Suspicion or her signature performance in the much easier to find Nina Takes A Lover.

    I admit I only saw it once, when it came out or very soon after on video. I really don't remember if I thought it was a good film or not, but I certainly remember certain bits of it.

    I haven't been paying much attention to this issue but seeing as the Nats have had or been flirting with the best record in baseball for the whole season why didn't they just shut him down for a month or two mid-season so he could both pitch in the playoffs and keep below to his inning limit? He is at 133 IP right now. Just shut him down now and give him a month off to protect his arm. That will give him time for 3-4 starts in September to get back into form for the post-season.

    I, for one, hope they shut him down. My fantasy baseball team is half a point behind the first place team... who has both Strasbourg AND Sale. Shut them both down, and I waltz to a fantasy title!

    Schilling pretty much ripped the Nats for their approach here (somewhere, the magic number went from 160 to 180, by the way. ). I am on the fence. This approach worked well with Jordan Z. But it's going to be tough to sit here in September or October and lose the deciding game with John or Ross pitching instead of Strasburg. Tough one. Rizzo is doing a good job.

    Strasburg swings a pretty decent bat, not even "for a pitcher". He already has a home run and it wasn't a cheapie and not the worst pitch ever thrown for a HR. In 44 PA this season he has 12 hits, 4 doubles, 3 walks, and 11 Ks for a .500 slugging percentage. OPS+ of 137. I know it's only 44 times up there, but it makes me giddy to look at those numbers. If Rizzo and Davey have any sense they'll keep him on the bench for a pinch-hit appearance to avoid burning the bench, although the shutdown will happen after rosters expand in September. Still...

    doing some quick math; doesnt this put him in line for just about 180 inn. if we extrapolate? Again, this seems like one of the bigger non stories of the year. If they get to the playoffs I would guess all bets are off.

    So what if they just skipped a couple of starts (either in a row or staggered), and pulled him after 5 in the others? Would that leave some slack in the 180, for him to go in the playoffs?

    Perhaps Rizzo values the regular season more than the postseason, which he knows is a crapshoot.
