I like the idea of Sonic Youth way better than the execution.
including while the Nats were in the field, an ever bigger sin than usual, as the wave theoretically could distract the home team’s pitcher.
My dad, who hates the wave, always said that if done at all, it should be when the home team is in the field. I'm not sure, but I'd guess his reasoning was that it was more likely to distract the hitter than the pitcher.
That's what I've heard as well. Although I suppose there aren't often a lot of fans in the batter's eye, and the upper-class fans behind home plate aren't likely to participate anyway, so it probably doesn't affect either much.
The wave doesn't really do anything for me either but I find vehement opposition from some people kind of snobby.
Meh. Pay attention to the game, nobody cares about your silly wave. And nobody cares what bands you like. Nor your fantasy teams. It's the game, stupid!
Talking Heads emerged from the No Wave movement, didn't they?
Bryce Harper has come out pro-wave.
No Wave was one guy on cymbal, another on banjo and a girl on violin.
And Albert Belle & Chris Truby & your granny on bongos.

**Let it be stipulated here that Sonic Youth**** and the Swans are the two exceptions, and I don't even really like the Swans that much. Also, some people label The Fall as "No Wave," which is simply incorrect; they may have intersected musically with it at one point but they were always on a different trip. Still are, in fact!
The wave doesn't really do anything for me either but I find vehement opposition from some people kind of snobby. Most people go to baseball games for the experience (the baseball AND the stadium, food, drink, conversation with friends, weather) and I think the wave plays into that experience.
Give me an intense, focused experience undiminished by imbeciles.
The wave is only for blowouts
