I hadn't thought of that, but that's a good call. Weirdly, the 2 uber-free agents--Hamilton and Greinke--have gotten almost exactly twice the anchor.
Didn't he want a no-trade if he signed an extension with the Mets?
They were hedging against the possibility of a trade partner seeing Dickey as more valuable at 1/5 than with the extension.
That was speculation for the 'low' extension offer from Dickey. I haven't seen it sourced from anybody about the No trade clause.

I really hope Toronto makes the playoffs. They have a really likable team, and should be able to rebuild their fanbase rapidly with some winning ball.
Would love to see Flores come to Toronto prompting a healthy discussion over the meaning of "non-elite".

Buehrle, Dickey, Johnson, Reyes, Izturis, Cabrera. Wow! What an off-season.
Don't forget, the Mets get a non-elite guy too. I mean, I personally would not call Anthony Gose an elite prospect...
They've actually been rebuilding it over the last couple years, beginning with the the cancellation of the Ricciardi clown show. Their TV ratings have been excellent, and they are seeing increases in attendance. A playoff season would definitely help, but getting people talking about baseball again in Toronto (and these trades have done that) will be a boost by itself.
How does the complete absence of hockey factor in? The Jays would seem to be the most likely beneficiaries of an NHL-free season.
It certainly can't hurt. The sports stations (owned largely by Rogers) have to fill the time with something, and the Jays trades have given them just that. It's better than listening to the endless speculation as to when (or if) the NHLPA and owners are going to come to an agreement.
It also helps that no one wants to talk about the Raptors.

I think the clue there is: Some of the two-year, $25MM extension will be a signing bonus for 2013.
Dickey's getting a taste upfront in this deal. Still, my quickie calculation suggests that bonus would have to be quite large to make the NPVs work out the same as 5/13/13.
Would Dickey sign with the Royals for 2/$25 though? Probably not. So the option for the Royals was Myers + for two years of Shields or Myers + for one year of Dickey.

They're probably the favorite now, but they have their weaknesses too. These trades have gutted a lot of their potential depth, so injuries (especially in the starting rotation) could cause all sorts of havoc. They also still need a 1B who doesn't fill me with hate, and someone who can remind Rasmus how to hit.
All this isn't a complaint, however. I love what they've done this offseason, in putting together a team which people aren't discussing in terms of if everything breaks right, they might be able to sneak in as a wildcard, but in terms of being the best of the AL East.
Pretty sure if Mets had countered his offer with $25M/2, Dickey snap accepts without any signing bonus required.
'Raptor' is a very general term for a bird of prey. The birds of prey is really quite a good name, I think, and 'raptor' is much snappier. The fact that it's also short for 'velociraptor' follows from the close relationship dinosaurs have to birds, and might even be why they chose that name, but I think the name is cool regardless of whether it was inspired by Jurassic Park.
The Raptors players have already gone on record that they suck, but nobody cares. If that happened in any other NBA, that would have caused a uproar.
Anyway, as much as I'm a fan of RA overall I have to say I'm happy with the trade. I have to assume d'Arnaud starts out the year in the majors at least as a platoon with Buck, right?
Would they go after Adam LaRoche or are they stuck with Lind?

They are likely stuck with Lind for now. They've already added a ton of payroll, between Johnson, Reyes, Dickey, and Buehrle.

I know I'll be rooting for them (possibly pretty hard) once the Sox get mathematically eliminated. The number of players they've added this offseason that I really like is quite staggering - to go with Bautista, Morrow, EE5, Rasmus, Raj Davis (who gets slammed for sucking but is actually a very fun player), who I already liked, I have also always liked Buehrle (would be in contention for favorite non-rooting interest player if it wasn't for the weird dog subtext and gigantic truck), Josh Johnson, Reyes, Dickey... it's amazing actually.
Meanwhile Boston adds one faceless automaton after another. Sorry for the hijack. I like the Blue Jays, end of post.
