I’m genuinely gutted. Sullivan was hands-down my favorite baseball writer on the internet.

For a guy who makes his living as a professional writer, I don’t know a whole lot about quality writing. This is one of the reasons I don’t like to self-identify as a writer, not that “blogger” is any better. But I do know that, when reporting news, you’re supposed to lead with the substance. And I say that not as a Fogerty hater. CCR was a major, major band. "Centerfield" is just a swing and a miss.

murder-suicide

I don't have any stats to back me up, but does this seem like a thing that is happening more & more frequently (I mean, as opposed to just murder or homicide)? Here in suburban Illinois a woman killed her boyfriend & 3 children before shooting herself.

It might just be that these stories are making the headlines more often.

That might have been enough to make those 600 mourners wish they had joined him.

For whatever reason I really don't like "Centerfield" at all. Can't explain it.

Every time I hear it I picture myself back in Little League, being replaced in the last inning by some .023 hitter who's the beneficiary of the "everyone gets to play" rule, and who's been nagging the coach for the last five innings by singing that song through an amplifier.

I think the joys of "Centerfield" wore off for me in junior high when we did social dance in PE and the (male) PE teachers decided to use it to teach us the Lindy. After a week of hearing nothing but that song while trying to dance with some guys whose tools for stepping on feet should be rated an 80, it took me about 10 years to be able to listen to the entire song again.
