I’m genuinely gutted. Sullivan was hands-down my favorite baseball writer on the internet.

For a guy who makes his living as a professional writer, I don’t know a whole lot about quality writing. This is one of the reasons I don’t like to self-identify as a writer, not that “blogger” is any better. But I do know that, when reporting news, you’re supposed to lead with the substance. I had the pleasure of meeting Creamer at the Nine conference a few years ago. Not only was he a great writer, he was a genuinely nice guy, a real fan of baseball, fun to talk with.

Baseball in '41, the Ruth and Stengel bios, all terrific. And I really enjoyed him in the Burns series too.

INTERESTING FACT: Creamer flunked out of the journalism program at Syracuse (over 20 years before it became the Newhouse School).

To have written two definitive biographies (Ruth and Stengel) is just phenomenal. A great, great writer.

Fare the well to one of the great baseball writers. I've read lots of his stuff and it's pretty uniformly excellent (Including snagging both Babe and Stengal for free at the Book Thing-man, I love that place). Crazy 08 is just a fun book, one of the better histories of that era.
And on that note, I was zipping through Amazon checking out what he had written and came across a title called, The Imperfect Diamond, a History of Baseball Labor wars.
