    OT: NBA Finals and June thread

    Not sure why no one has put up a new thread yet, then I remember that only 10-12 guys here care about the NBA.

    we won’t detract from what this site is really about: the IRS and Biogenesis.

    Spent some time yesterday thinking about the WCQ tomorrow night with Costa Rica. I feel like this is the worst possible time to have Tim Howard out. It's not that Guzan is that big a drop from Howard but it seems to me that one of Howard's strenghts is his ability to take charge of the backline and organize them while I'm not sure Guzan has that skill. While Guzan has been around awhile he's relatively light on actual game experience, he's been a long time backup.


    I think Guzan should be fine. He's had to deal with a pretty crappy Aston Villa defense this season, if nothing else.

    Finally got around to reading that Klinsmann article. I wish the author wrote more about the tactical problems because the "OMG Germans are taking over the American team" stuff is just silly. I am not a fan of Jermaine Jones as a player or his personality, but he's currently the US' best defensive midfielder. Fabian Johnson is the team's best LB. Danny Williams has his uses.

    As for Klinsmann's tactics, it has to be hard to implement a strict tactical system, with players in clearly-defined positions, considering the current amount of turnover with American players.

    Somewhat related to Sosa's thoughts in 448 -- Spanish clubs' back-taxes becoming a hot-button issue. I don't have the quote handily available, but I remember being floored by a Swiss Ramble piece in seeing just how lenient the local municipalities were with club debts.

    And currently they have allowed more goals than every team but QPR (who have allowed one more). From what I've seen Guzan does a pretty good job on shotstopping and dealing with crosses but AV gives up a LOT of chances. Now some of that is likely a function of Aston Villa being comprised of not very good players but I worry about Guzan's organizational skills.

    I don't think this is a problem with Guzan... he's quite vocal, and the frequent, horrific gaffes committed by Villa defenders this season have not generally involved miscommunications with the goalie. Villa have conceded a *lot* of chances that can be primarily ascribed to A) bad midfield play, B) youth and inexperience on the defensive line, and/or C) poor coverage of rebounds after Guzan makes yet another great save. The latter point suggests that Brad needs to work on helping to organize the guys on the backside of the play, if you're looking for something to be concerned about.

    Is this good or bad? This seems like it would mute the effect of the crowd and help the Costa Ricans.

    Who makes the call on whether a game would be abandoned? I realize soccer gets played in some pretty crazy conditions but 4 inches of snow in 2 hours is a LOT. I can't imagine how you could play in that and presumably the ground would be frozen as well.

    There's a lot of sore winner-ism in Gold's comments, but he's not entirely wrong. For all the talk of they were building the stadium with a legacy in mind, the whole process of figuring out a long-term plan has been pretty shambolic.

    I would think on a day like this long shots would be a good play. See if you can get a slip from the keeper or a fumble or something like that. Make him handle the ball often.

    That ball bounces ... like the field is frozen ... which it most likely is (I have no idea if any MSL pitches have undersoil heating)

    I think ESPN needs to get creative with their camera angles. The low angle and the behind the goal angle both were clearer than the side angle is right now.

    Of course if someone would WIPE OFF THE FREAKIN' CAMERA that might help too.

    Apparently Adidas owns the rights to the orange ball. Tonight they are using a Nike ball, which I guess owns the yellow patent. Or something like that.

    I thought FIFA rules say a game called after completing a half is not replayed.

    Also, I'm not liking what I'm seeing from the US. The good, crisp through passes just arn't there.

    Seriously, the only sport you can play in this weather is football. Even hockey would be questionable given the amount of accumulation on the ice.

    Jones, Jozy, & Goodson have looked the best for the US. A little worried about Cameron, he looks a touch slow and/or is a bit unsure of himself on this field.

    Zusi is the guy who hasn'tmuch to offer for me. I think Beasley has done a cromulent job particularly given how little he's played of late for the US.
