Wrestling, Baseball-Softball and Squash make (Olympic) list

Wrestling, squash and baseball-softball made the IOC short list Wednesday for inclusion in the 2020 Olympics.

Three months after being dropped from the 2020 program, wrestling took a big step toward keeping its Olympic status.

Eight sports were vying for a single opening in the lineup.

Eliminated from contention were five sports — karate, roller sports, sport climbing, wakeboarding and the Chinese martial art of wushu.

Dwight Howard was on the roster, but had back surgery. Not sure why they didn't make a change after he wasn't going to be able to go to London. Maybe they couldn't?

Why do they do such a poor jon constructing the rosters? Carmelo Anthony was playing center for 10 minutes there. This game should have been a blowout.

What was the pool of big men for the USA to choose from with Howard & Bosh out? Chandler was suppose to be the rim protector, but today his play didn't adjust well to the refs and Spain's size.

I guess Bynum would have been a better choice, no idea if he was interested or even considered.

i think bynum was nursing various injuries. i know he was/is planning to go to germany to have the same serum surgery that kobe had during the lockout.

and the US did lose dwight howard and chris bosh and blake griffin. you could probably make an argument that all 3 would have been chosen over the 3 bigs the US actually brought (chandler, love, and davis). they were also playing without derrick rose.

though it should be noted that spain was playing without ricky rubio, and that was probably a bigger loss than any of the players who weren't on the US roster.

Plus Duncan and Garnett are too old to be spending 4+ weeks playing international ball. Aldridge was hurt as well. The USA big men pool is shallow to start with, so when you have to eliminate 6-7 of them due to injuries/age, you end up with what you saw today.

Perhaps, but with a healthy Howard, Spain would have had trouble breaking 75 today.

I've come around on handball. I won't says I'm a fan but I appreciate the game a lot more. Mike Gorman and the woman announcing the final have done a great job of educating while informing. Handball aficionados may feel differently but I don't feel like they are going least common denominator but using the occasional lapses in play to add some insight for a newbie like me.

The unfamiliar horse thing makes the 3rd event in Modern Pentathlon fascinating.

And things can sometimes go very, very, wrong.

after a series of rotten draws for other u.s. wrestlers varner takes advantage of a less arduous side of the bracekt to get to the medal rounds and then wrestled well and won the gold

Jordan Burroughs says he wants to chase John Smith's record of six consecutive world/Olympic titles before considering MMA. That would be very good for USA wrestling.

one of the only events i like to watch at olympics is marathon. was it on before the basketball final?

the televising of the games is just a mess, even worse on the west coast.

I would prefer trapeze swinging and how many clowns you can fit into a car to rhythmic gymnastics. Time for some baseball.

I don't really know which centers the basketball team should have added, but they should have been able to put at least one large man on the floor at all times. In the 4th quarter Carmelo was guarding Serge Ibaka, and on offense all five guys were just standing around the perimeter. The massive talent advantage was severely undercut by a massive tactical disadvantage. I feel like the team could have benefited from any old flabby big guy, like whoever the current version of Will Perdue is.

Funny thing is that he just tagged along until that point and never was in the lead, just before he made his move it looked like he was on the verge of losing contact with the Kenyans.

Adele is a big deal, no? Lots of good Scottish bands though I don't know what kind of crossover appeal they have. Clearly they should have taken this opportunity to give the world the Super Furry Animals reunion with Rhys Ifans the world has been clamoring for!

No, it was them. They came out on a flatbead and rounded the stadium performing "Our House"

So, I was reading a story about Missy Franklin. She will be returning to high school for her senior year, and is deciding whether to go to college, or go pro and take millions in endorsements. First, she could of course do both. She would just have to pay her way through college. But it got me thinking. The NCAA is so anal about their athletes receiving the tiniest amount of compensation, how could an Olympic athlete possibly remain eligible? College athletes get in trouble for one too many campus visits, making long distance phone calls from the coach's office, etc. How many freebies have these Olympic athletes gotten over the past 2 weeks?

now i'm completely confused. thought i missed the men's marathon this morning.

according to tv listings it was on this morning ...

so i just happened to turn on the tv just now (3pm in los angeles) to see what was being shown, and they are showing a tape delay of the marathon. that wasn't even in the tv listings.

jeez, i hate NBC. i know i could watch it streaming, but i can't remember our damn password for our provider, and my g.f. is not here.

i thought these olympics were well done and a lot of fun

disappointed in the u.s. equestrian team. talk about a pile of yuck

but the wrestling team assuaged some of my angst

I've immensely enjoyed this closing ceremony. Only complaint is I would have preferred graphics to inform in lieu of Ryan Seacrest.

Actually, I enjoyed the closing ceremonies. I was rather upset that NBC cut Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" from the broadcast, although I would have been even more upset if Kate had actually showed up to sing it. And Bob Costas had the gall to talk over both of Elbow's songs...
