If a passenger decides to light up in the bathroom, because they can't possibly do 3 hours without their deathsticks, it would be technically accurate to say there was a fire on board the plane. A small contained fire in the kitchen area, isolated from any of the planes system, is not going to do jack. People are acting like this was an engine fire or something. Aerophobia does weird things to otherwise rational people I guess...
No they aren't. Planes suck in and filter air from outside the cabin through the engines during flight.
