New Green book looks to be a diamond Dallas page turner.

It is a good, lively book and it mirrors Green’s good, lively 6 decades in the game. He rips only three people, Bobby Valentine, Art Mahaffey and Gene Mauch.

“Valentine is a phony and that’s what I call him in the book,” Green grumbles, choosing to skip details of the possible backstabbing while Dallas managed the Mets.

For the curious, Spencer's Strat-O-Matic card didn't have a name because the union didn't permit it, as he was a strikebreaker. (This policy eventually changed.)

Dear God, I had that card. And I played in a no-restrictions Strat league, so I could use Spencer as much as I wanted. Good times.

EDIT: And every time he came up, we would all say, "Spenssseeerrrr!", like Hawk did in "Spenser: For Hire"!

Spenser's OPS+ that year was 236, BTW. You'd think that would be the best ever with at least 67 AB, but Bonds and Ruth both had three (full!) seasons that were better! Plus Ted Williams' truncated 1953 (91 AB) scores at 268. Yikes.

Big whoop. Every player the Cardinals bring up from the minors is an anonymous semi-prospect who turns out to be a major league starter from day one. Every veteran they get from other teams is an over-the-hill injury risk who turns out to have several great seasons left. Freaking Abraham Nunez had a 120-hit season with the Cardinals. I think the only disappointing performances this team has gotten from anyone in the last 15 years were from Khalil Greene and Mark Mulder.

Damn, my one consolation from the 2007 draft has been...sure Kevin Ahrens sucks...but so does Peter Kozma!

Holy snikies. Now I wanna see the Spencer card.
I play in a league with few restrictions. A player has to have 100 AB's to qualify, then it's no restrictions. This card would be beastly

Duh-For some reason I blanked and thought that was the Kozma card!

Edited to add that this was superduh because if I'd thought it through it would have been obvious that strat doesn't print cards while the season is still on.
Man, I need to drink more coffee on these 5 AM days
