How did I miss this? Also, what? How shallow was he playing?
I'm as saber-rific as anybody, but the number of times I've heard a Red Sox player say this year that Jonny Gomes is the "glue of the team", or something similar, is amazing. He seems to be one of those guys who is somehow simultaneously:
- not a star player,
- works his ### off all the time,
- demands everybody else works their ### off, too, and
- is still able to be everybody's favorite guy despite getting the lecture about hustling your ### off.
When he showed up, me and my dad and my little boys were outside and he almost ran over us coming to the park. He had the pedal to the metal, running about 50 in the parking lot, just so excited to get to the ballpark.
Yet, like many other famous "glue" guys, teams that employ Gomes have never employed him for very long. The Rays non-tendered him. The Reds grabbed him and they did re-up him for 2 years but also shipped him to the Nats. Then a year in Oakland and now a 2-year in Boston.
If you had told me after the last game of the 2011 season, when the Red Sox lost to the Orioles, and the Yankees gift-wrapped that comeback win for Tampa to send the Rays to the playoffs, that:
And thirteen from winning me my first-ever BBTF bb-ref bet
Fielding aside, this article gave us the startling revelation that almost running over Jake Peavy's family at high speed will win his everlasting respect.
The implication is that it's not important (or wears off quick) no matter what the players and management say in-season.
I wonder if the Sox will have any interest in Peralta. He could be had at a cheap price. Cheaper than Drew for sure....but there lack of interest in Melky makes me think they won't.
