I love Dynasty League Baseball and have played it for years. I love it so much I provided a free ad for the game this season to thank Mike Cieslinski for the many years of enjoyment I’ve gotten from the game. At some point I will do an in-depth review of the game for the site to so you can get a better idea about the game’s strengths and weaknesses.

1 2 >I agree. Halladay is at least 6 spots too low.
What's the point of even parsing this list? It's like making fun of a retarded kid's crayon picture of his new puppy. Yes Sporting News, that's a great list. And you made it all the way to 50! HURRAY!
It's more fun than actually working?
Which is also more fun than actually working.
You are one mean Canadian!
All those guys are major impact players RIGHT NOW, but they are in the 18-30 range because they have had short careers (minus Beltran, who will always be underrated).
We're all this mean. We just pretend to be polite and kind, in order to distract you from our evil plans.
Is there anyone on the planet who would take Jeter over Longoria RIGHT NOW?

That sounds about right, I have no problem with that. Morneau is clutch and of course Canadian. [/sarcasm]

Needs more Chris Jakubauskas
Don't forget he's an MVP. I mean how many MVPs has Mauer won?
Zero.
as selected by a panel of 100 Hall of Famers, major award winners and other baseball personalities.
Now the list makes a lot more sense ... if it was just compiled by a random BBWAA guy, then I'd worry.
Steve Phillips thinks Beltran is way too high. He should be at least below Torii Hunter.
A head of Youkilis, Mauer, McCann, Roy Oswalt, Matt Holliday, etc, etc.
as selected by a panel of 100 Hall of Famers, major award winners and other baseball personalities, during open bar night.
Fixed.
Bah.
They must have already had 49 by the time they got to Zambrano.
Snubbing Matt on his birthday - now that's really tempting fate.
I am better than your kids
Jason Bay at #41 is THE name that sticks out for you? Over all the others? Really?
Christmas already?
That can happen if you are beamed up before Scotty tells you the transporter is fixed.
He's the only player I can't explain.
Everyone on this list fits into one of these categories.
-One of the best players in the game (actually most of the list, although mostly in the wrong order)
-A superstar who is past his prime but used to be one of the best players in the game.
-The usual suspects among overrated players (HR hitters who can't field and closers)
And then there's Jason Bay (and Carlos Zambrano). I didn't realize ANYONE thought he was one of the best 50 players in the game.
That can happen if you are beamed up before Scotty tells you the transporter is fixed.
I have no defense for that mistake other than, damn weed.
Bay is 20th among active players in career OPS+ and he's beaten his career mark 4 of the last 5 seasons. I don't think I'd put him in the top 50, but he's hardly an absurd choice.
Zambrano's 9th in ERA+ although he hasn't actually matched his career number since 2005. Again, probably not in the top 50, but one can make an argument depending on how many starting pitchers you put there.
Pedroia WAR (from fangraphs)
07: 3.8
08: 6.6
Braun WAR
07: 3.1
08: 3.9
Both are currently 25 years old. How is it a joke?
There are a lot of problems with using a straight career OPS+ list.
That list seems to have a relatively high PA threshold, so it excludes young stars like Hanley and Longoria. It also penalizes players who broke into the majors at a younger age than Bay and had a longer adjustment period (like Utley). And it gives equal weight to last year and 15 years ago.
This would be a little better, since it ranks all major leaguers by their OPS+ accumulated from 2006 to 2009, with at least 1000 PAs. Bay ranks 36th, and would certainly rank much lower after positional and defense adjustment.
I don't see what separates him from Dunn, Ibanez, Burrell, Cust, etc.
