Townsend: Troy Tulowitzki denies accusing Madison Bumgarner of doctoring baseballs

That brings us to Coors Field on Friday night. For a few seconds it seemed like we may have been headed towards that inevitable flare up. It happened in the third inning with Troy Tulowitzki running on first base, D.J. LeMahieu at the plate, and Madison Bumgarner pitching. As it’s being reported, Tulowitzki asked first base umpire Tim McClelland to check the baseball. McClelland complied, stopping play to give it a once over before tossing it out of play.

Bumgarner had the outward reaction ...

[Weiss'] road map comes from those men he played for during his 14-year big-league career — the Oakland A's Tony La Russa, the Florida Marlins' Rene Lachemann, the Rockies' Don Baylor and the Atlanta Braves' Bobby Cox.

For the sake of Rockies' fans, I hope he's more about LaRussa and Cox (combined 11 pennants, 4 titles) than Lachemann and Baylor (combined 4 seasons over .500, 8 years finishing 5th or worse).

Also, Baylor and Lachemann actually managed the same team, the 2002 Cubs! To the surprise of no one, they went 67-95!

Walt was a gamer, but perhaps not scrappy. He was pretty tall for a shortstop and I don't remember him ever coming off the bench.

Great. Not only do they only give him a 1 year deal, but saddle him with a coaching staff full of likely potential replacements.

Are the Rockies the most innovative managerial organization in baseball? Just this year we had the experimental starting rotation, and now their Thunderdome style field manager incentive system.
