Townsend: Troy Tulowitzki denies accusing Madison Bumgarner of doctoring baseballs

That brings us to Coors Field on Friday night. For a few seconds it seemed like we may have been headed towards that inevitable flare up. It happened in the third inning with Troy Tulowitzki running on first base, D.J. LeMahieu at the plate, and Madison Bumgarner pitching. As it’s being reported, Tulowitzki asked first base umpire Tim McClelland to check the baseball. McClelland complied, stopping play to give it a once over before tossing it out of play.

Bumgarner had the outward reaction ...

Ah, the memories. Not just for A's fans.
They didn't pick Ozzie Guillen because "if Walt Weiss were in there, he would have caught that ball!"

According to this article, the Rockies pursued Weiss. Interesting trend here, of former players being named as managers with no professional coaching experience. Ventura, Matheny, now Weiss. Have to wonder how Tim Wallach or Ryne Sandberg feels about this.

The Rockies pursued him, and he still only got a one year contract?

It seems like a difficult position to put someone in. He's a
1) New guy
2) No previous managerial experience
3) Short timer

I wish him luck, because that sounds like it could turn uncomfortable really fast.

What does Jason Giambi do? Start the dream with a minor league job somewhere? Go home and swim in his Olympic-size pool of money?

Jeff Kent just got voted off of Survivor last night (I realize it was filmed months ago) so he's free. He acquitted himself very well on that show, I was impressed. He's obviously an intelligent, calculating guy, and came off as reasonably likeable. Only one other player on the show knew who he was, and she was voted off a few weeks ago without having told anyone.

Weiss will be the first player I saw play college ball to become a MLB manager. This is exciting in a very vague sort of way.

Good for the Jays as Weiss was never rumoured to be looked at for their job. So basically the Jays can pick and choose from all other candidates now knowing that whoever they pick has no other option if they want to be a ML manager.

Ventura and Matheny at least worked for the organizations that hired them, so the teams knew them and knew about them. Weiss appears to have been picked because he was nearby.

Pretty sure that Survivor did a nice editing job to make Kent look good, he was beefing about returning players getting another chance, when the guy has already made 20 times what the winner gets anyway. He was lucky that one woman who knew who he was didn't go off on him when she got voted out. It was also pretty funny to watch that challenge where the younger guy kept catching stuff instead of him, I told my girlfriend, maybe they needed to roll the stuff out there.

Me too. But I think the first guy to become a MLB manager who I saw play in college was Ron Gardenhire, unless I'm forgetting someone.

Weiss appears to have been picked because he was nearby.

To be specific, coaching a Denver high school team. But he has spent time with the Rockies as a minor-league instructor and scout since he retired.

This seems like a terrible hire to me. Weiss makes Lane Kiffin look like a seasoned veteran.

I get the sense this was a pure character hire. I'd be happy to be wrong, but I suspect Weiss will get fired midway through the 2015 season, with the team never reaching .500 under him.
