RIP Fred White

Fred White, a Royals radio voice for 25 years, died Wednesday due to complications from melanoma, a day after announcing his retirement following a 40-year relationship with the club.

White teamed with Denny Matthews on broadcasts from 1973-98, and since had served as the team’s director of broadcast services and the Royals Alumni.

His retirement was due to health issues, and he died in hospice care.

Strange that he died on December 15, but his death is only now being made public. He was a frequent visitor to Cooperstown back in the day, park of the Hank Bauer/Yogi Berra/Moose Skowron crowd.

Carey insisted that the night before the perfect game, he and Don Larsen walked around Times Square. They stopped a novelty store where Carey bought a mock newspaper with the made-up headline LARSEN PITCHES NO-HITTER.

The kinescope of the TV coverage of Larsen's perfect game (everything but the top half of the first inning) is available on DVD. I think I know where I'll spend the Amazon gift card I got for Xmas.

When I clicked on that link I felt as blind as an ump, since the page came up blank.
