I was going to write something today for SI.com re Votto. Specifically, that Votto represented one of the clearest cases of Old-v-New schools of thought, re hitting production. The idea was discussed when The Technician was sitting on 4 HR/20 BI. Now, he’s up to 7 and 22. Both #s are subpar for him and, in fact, for a No. 3 hitter. Are they going to use a random number generator and keep track of the numbers that lead to each decision? For example, if you have a .300 hitter and a .250 hitter, all other things being equal, you should use the .300 hitter more often, but not to the exclusion of the .250 hitter. I can see the manager rolling dice in the dugout, great for the TV crowd. Perhaps better to have a small handheld random number generator in the jacket pocket.

Ahhh random numbers, like when Roger Repoz hit 11 HR in my 44 game, 1971 Strat O Matic Season...I still have the stats....I knew it was weird even then as he only hit 13 all year in real life..

The analysis is going to add a layer of complexity to the data. Defensive positioning will improve, which will skew the numbers for certain teams, which will cause defensive stats to add the positioning data to make sense of them.

"When everybody is doing the same thing or close to it, is there a competitive advantage? Probably not, right? So when you think about how all organizations now are valuing certain things, what we do now is spend a lot of energy trying to determine what is being overvalued and then look at what is undervalued. Then maybe we should be swimming at that end of the pool. So, that's one focus."
