The relevant question is whether you increase the value of your franchise by signing a particular player, not whether you paid above or below the average price for that player.
Plus it is not really linear, free agency is not a truly efficient market, and inflation matters, so it won't be $7 million for very long.
Also, it's unclear a win is worth the same for similar franchises: the Yankees probably get more benefit from a 100 win season than the Marlins do, since they have a stronger infrastructure to monetize those wins.
