If the shift was not working on David Ortiz, then I would expect a Red Sox employee talking about it to say that the shift is costing him hits.
“Trying to do things just to do things, you know. If you’re shifting on a No. 8 hitter, just because [the numbers] say he grounds out to the right side, and you’ve got a guy throwing 99mph that he’s probably not going to turn around, then why are you shifting?”
Yeah the trendiness of the shift kind of pisses me off. It's like any time their's some weird BABIP or UZR numbers, some guy says "oh this team shifts a lot blah blah blah". If the shift was that effective, it would have been done earlier than right now (although I guess you can say the same thing about bunting, intentional walks, etc.).
