Shaughnessy is too good to have to invent anything. He neither invented anything in this instance nor accused Ortiz of using steroids and their cousins. What he did was take his skepticism and his curiosity, good traits for a newspaperman to have, and ask Ortiz about steroids. Ortiz’s responses did not indicate anger of being accused of wrong doing.

I would compare the Ortiz column to the columns I have written about Mike Piazza and my suspicions about his possible use of steroids. I ...

There seems to be a steady drip of players calling for harsher penalties. Some of them are retired players, for whom talk is cheap and consequences are few, but there's a list of active players who have said this, and that list is growing. All I can think is this: sooner or later, someone on that list is going to test positive.

In Rickey's case, that was a true statement.

Why wouldn't guys who are clean not want severe punishments? In their eyes they could be losing millions of dollars to guys breaking the rules.
