Finally, something goes right!

The Yankees released first baseman/outfielder Juan Rivera, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports...

The Yankees added Vernon Wells and Lyle Overbay this week. Wells, Overbay, and Ben Francisco are making the team, Rivera was told, according to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch and others.

How does the minor league portion of the rule v work? They don't need to be in the big leagues. Do they need to stay on the 40 man or something?

My co-worker is 8.75 months pregnant with twins. She is from Minnesota and Ben Revere is her favorite player. I've met few fans who adore a player as much as she does him. The Denard Span trade made her sad enough but if Revere is traded before her babies arrive, I don't think I'll have the heart to tell her, for fear of adding to her stress. It may sound like I'm kidding but I'm not.

How does the minor league portion of the rule v work? They don't need to be in the big leagues. Do they need to stay on the 40 man or something?

No rules at all. Just buying players who aren't in the top 78 (there's a 38-man AAA protection list) of their own organization's eligibles.

there's also a aa phase (so, the 40 man is protected + the 38 man aaa protection list + the 36 or so man aa protection list) - they cost 4k, instead of the 12k from the aaa phase. it's so hard to find a usable talent in this phase that it had *no* picks this year.

wonder why so many good d third basemen went in the aaa phase this year?

i normally am not big on the actual choices in the big league phase (mind you, this stuff is way more art/fit than science) but i like the early troika of fields, rondon, and silverio this year.

Ben Revere? I see he has 1064 career PA. Would have guessed about 200. The Twins don't get much publicity these days.

The Phils outfield as of yesterday was Brown, Mayberry, Ruf, and Nix. This was necessary. Hopefully Tyler Cloyd can put up a Vance Worleyish performance.

Without looking around for facts, my guess is the Twins will go with a makeshift patch like Darin Mastroianni and hold off on calling up a real solution like Aaron Hicks. The two variations might be that Joe Benson wins the temporary gig in spring training or they find a discarded CF glove free agent before April 1. But it's totally a look toward 2014.

I like Revere a lot, but the league might have figured him out a little last year, or perhaps he just wore down. Check out his second half numbers: .278/.321/.328/.649 He's a great fielder but his arm is so weak they may want to see if he actually throws left handed.

I think Ryan did really well to get that kindof return for a guy who probably won't hit all that well in the majors. His 2012 is probably about as good as he gets, and the average isn't a good bet to stay around .300 IMO with so little hard contact.

Digesting this a little more and I agree Ryan did very well. May was the best arm in the Phils' minor league system and could develop into a horse. He has shaky command and is a flyball pitcher so getting out of Philly can only help him long-term. With Cloyd arriving, Worley was expendable for the Phils. Pressure's on Ruben now to add a power bat, especially if the Young trade happens. Hamilton makes too much sense right?

I feel vindicated, I have been telling everyone that the Mariners should sign Hamilton. They have money, they have young pitchers coming up, but no sign of much offense anywhere. A big LH OF is exactly what they need. It always seemed like the best fit to me. The only problem would be if the price went way too high (salaries are not as high as I expected so far) or if the M's had some problem signing a big FA. MAKE IT HAPPEN, Z.

I think #89 and #90 going back to back like this is sort of Hamilton's next week in a nutshell. The options are closing in the CF market, Grienke is down to two huge dollar suitors and the big Texan is starting to look almost affordable. A couple more observations like this and he can add that fifth year again...

Terry Ryan, Twins General Manager, tells us that they will listen to all offers on Joe Mauer & Justin Morneau. They need pitching

Have to think that Mauer would still require them to get blown the eff away on a deal, simply due to the blowback that would come from the fan base. Even with him not playing up to his contract, he's far and away the most popular Twin and the most talented one.

The trouble with both those guys is the big money involved means the talent coming back would be pretty minimal. The Twins don't need salary relief, they need talent, so those deals don't make a ton of sense and probably won't be made before the season. I could see Morneau moved at the deadline though. There are doubts about him after the concussion, so letting him play healthy for a few months to build stats and letting the market develop a little would probably increase his trade value.

Apparently the Red Sox offered a deal where they would be willing to pay all of Mauer's salary and where they'd convert him to primarily a 1B, but, like you said Cris, it's not about the money, it's about talent. Any deal with the Red Sox where BOS would be swallowing the contract would be unlikely to bring any big prospects.
