And there's the other wrinkle that Taiwan isn't claiming to be independent, but the legitimate Chinese government. The question of independence/reunification is the main political split there. China really doesn't like talk of independence, so they tend to cheer on their old foes in Kuomintang.

The problem is that we're damned either way, claiming either isn't going to fly, and the official line of claiming to be legitimate China at least make us just politically screwed and not you know.. Palestinian screwed. but that's for another thread, as a whole in the recent 4-5 years with the return of the KMT and a more friendly China approach has generally worked better than his predecessor threat of indepdence approach.

it's ashame too, i'm not sure why he doesn't play this year, his new contract is down and it's likely his last anyway. he basically sealed his status as Japan's most legendary player with his 10th inning winning hit against Korea last time.
