    I like it that they temporarily staved off the mercy rule. National games should be about pride.

    Andrelton Simmons was highly regarded as a pitcher coming into the draft. But he refused to sign with a team unless they were willing to try him as a SS.
    Even then, the initial report was that he couldn't hit enough to stick and would go back to pitching.

    Sorry, Profar's a shortstop...did you mean someone else or am I missing a joke or something (which happens often enough here)?
    EDIT: Oh, I assume this is referring to the fact that a lot of teams originally wanted to sign him as a pitcher. Makes sense.

    If you are from the islands and throw hard . . . you sign as a SS. Unless you are so fat that it is simply incomprehensible that you will play MIF at the MLB level, in which case they try to make you a reliever because you are "unpolished", unlike the US kid whose daddy has been paying for one-on-one daily pitching lessons since he was 11.

    Italian citizenship laws are very, very liberal. Basically any paisan who has an Italian ancestor born after 1861 can get citizenship in most instances, provided they can find the correct documentation (which is often the challenge, since it has to be in Italian, notarised in Italy, etc.). I have a friend who is a fourth generation American but satisfied the requirements and is duly a citizen of Italy.

    So with no day 10 chatter posted, I'll just keep posting here. Jameson Taillon who is starting for Canada today is Baseball America's 19th ranked prospect. So this could be the big stage debut of a star pitcher.

    I have to say, the Venezuelan flag on the Spain pitcher's glove was embarrassing. I'm about as pro-WBC as it gets, but it's a real stain on the credibility of the tournament when you have fake countries participating. They do play some baseball in Spain but they have one native born player. I'd have rather seen Panama in the tournament.

    That's what I was asking in the newer OMNICHATTER. I have no idea why Torre thinks this is a good time to get Victorino into a game as a starter.
