It's funnier in the headline -- Barry Larkin named manager of Brazil -- than the excerpt -- Barry Larkin has been named manager of Team Brazil. That word "team" really changes the tone.

Shawn Green struck out in his first at-bat. So I guess his comeback isn't happening yet. Israel leads 1-0 in top of the second thanks to a 1st inning bomb by Nate Freiman of the Padres' organization.

Israel breaks it open. They look good in terms of position player talent, but need pitching. If they qualify and can persuade Kinsler and Braun to play for them, I'd imagine they'd be competitive, in a one and done sense, with the big teams.

Israel wins 7-3. SA made it semi-interesting near the end when Israel's pitching and fielding left them (for example, Israel put one of the few Israelis in on mop-up duty and he promptly started walking people).

Day one done.
