Philly makes sense, but if the Yankees offer, say, 1 year at $13m, would they be able to offer a 2-year deal that makes it work his while?
Probably not. Do the Yanks have enough room to offer him 13 though? I thought they were tight against the cap.

All I've got to say is this: what a dud of a winter meetings so far. There hasn't been a significant trade of any real substance. (I'm sorry, but Yuniel Escobar doesn't cut it.)
The biggest free agent signings have been Napoli and Victorino, but they're hardly blockbuster signings. The two big prizes--Hamilton and Greinke--remain unsigned.
No blockbuster signings? Did you miss Mike Zagurski joining the Pirates?!?

I'm perfectly fine adding Schierholtz, but I'm not sure I see where he fits... Assuming Brett Jackson is going to be given a chance to K 300 times in CF and absent Soriano/DeJesus being moved -- there's already Campana and Sappelt to be the 4th/5th OFers.
I suppose Nate can hit - and neither of them can -- so that's something, but both Campana and Sappelt are 26 and cheap (though, pretty sure both have options left).

I blame Greinke and Hamilton. They are holding the whole thing up.

There's no way that the Royals would consider trading Wil Myers AND another prospect for James Shields, right?

In last week's Heyman article that was posted, I predicted a Shields for Myers + Kyle Smith trade.
To me, at least, it has seemed like the writing is on the wall that Shields is Dayton Moore's white whale. Pretty sure Friedman knows it and is taking advantage of that to get the maximum return. It doesn't hurt that the writing seems to be on the wall that Dayton Moore's job seems to be dependent on a a big boost in the standings in 2013. Any GM should be trying to exploit the fact that KC is going to be willing to pay more than it should in future talent to get MLB ready talent.
I think there is a slight risk that KC opts for a FA pitcher instead, but if KC lands a pitcher via trade, I'd expect more than just Myers to be the price that is paid. (Note, I think that is a massive overpay; I simply think it will happen.)
And I've been posting this in the Royals threads for the past couple of weeks but I'm pretty convinced that Dayton Moore believes that Wil Myers is blocked at the MLB level. He can't play DH because you've got Billy Butler there. He really isn't suited for CF. And the corner OF spots are already filled with Gordon and Frenchy. I think this trade would be a lot less likely if Moore thought he had a spot in the lineup to give to Wil Myers.
Shields had a weird season. His K and BB rates were excellent, he gave up fewer hits than IP, and he a good HR rate, and yet he still had a 108 ERA+. Did the bullpen allow a lot of inherited runners to score?
Anyway, Shields is a good pitcher, but unless they sign him to an extension, trading Myers for him would be really, really dumb.

I interpreted the rumors (or maybe just assumed) that it would be Shields plus something for Myers; not the other way around.

Back to Youk, there is a report that the Yankees offered him 1/$12.

< 1 2The negotiations stalled when the team insisted he change his name to Trey Ripken.
Probably not. Do the Yanks have enough room to offer him 13 though? I thought they were tight against the cap.
I think that's for 2014.
Mine is: one of them kicked a routine double play ball to cost the Cubs the 2003 pennant, and the other got a World Series ring as a result.
Who?
Would have liked to see him stay with the Phils. Would he have gotten that much in arbitration?!?

Make a big move, somebody.

I weep that Wil Myers could be seen as blocked by Jeff Francoeur. My daughter is barely blocked by Jeff Francoeur.
